A Day in the Life of a Romantasy Author Mom

A Day in the Life of a Romantasy Author Mom

People picture a writer’s day as candlelight and silence. Mine has a leotard, a glove, a full-time job, and a laptop that does not get opened until almost everyone else in the house is asleep.

Morning: the job, the kids, the handoff

The day starts with the full-time job and getting two kids, six and seven, fed and out the door. Writing doesn’t happen here. I am not a morning writer, and I stopped pretending I would become one.

Afternoon and evening: gymnastics, baseball, and stolen minutes

Gymnastics for the six-year-old, baseball for the seven-year-old, most weeks both. I bring a notebook or my phone to every parking lot and every set of bleachers. A scene doesn’t get drafted there, usually, but a knot in the plot gets untangled, or a line of dialogue finally lands.

Weekend mornings: groceries, not writing

Grocery shopping happens on weekends, because weekdays have no room left for it. People assume a writer’s weekend is extra writing time. Mine is mostly errands, with writing squeezed in after the kids are down, same as every other night.

Night: the actual writing

Once the house is quiet, the real session happens. Not every night, and never for as long as I’d like, but this is where the manuscript actually moves. It isn’t glamorous. It’s also the only version of this that has ever worked for me.
